Welcome!

Words from Dana, founder of The Spirited Purpose Project

This project started with a simple nudge from that inner voice we all have — the one that sometimes whispers, “Give it a go.”

“It” being to create a lively, purposeful, intention-oriented online space for spiritual solopreneurs — women in middle age and beyond, including interfaith chaplains, healers, and creatives — who are working to help others.

They do this through their unique work or service in the world and through their willingness to keep showing up unapologetically as themselves in business (and I suspect, in life).

These are women who aren’t afraid to walk the edge, color outside the lines, and try something new.

How courageous is that?

From that inner nudge

Was born the first offering: 1:1 intuitive business mentoring with an optional membership space. So you don’t have to go it alone.

A different mentoring approach with out-of-the-box chaplaincy + business + intuitive skills to help you discover or grow your business from the inside out.

Whether you’re dreaming of starting a spiritual solopreneur business or hoping to move the needle forward on a business you already have, you’ll find help here.

Oh. And.

If you believe that your time and talents are worth something and you wish to make a viable living from them, then you are in the perfect place. Because this project believes that being a spiritual entrepreneur and earning a living are not mutually exclusive.

But what about those women who don’t have & don’t want a business?

well, that still small voice whispered again, “there’s more!”

Which led to creating Spiritual Conversation Gatherings for women spiritual seekers looking for deeper conversation.
Our inaugural gathering is starting soon. Click HERE for more information.

And the last service offering (for now!) is the Spiritual Services Connections, where we connect those looking for spiritual services with the skilled solopreneurs offering them.

For info on all our offerings, Click here.

So, the idea here is pretty straightforward: Let’s put more good into the world by being our true selves and bringing our own special mix of talents and ways of expressing them, whether paid or in some other way outside of business. And, if you cannot quite yet see the full magnitude of your gifts, let’s work on that.

Together we can make magic happen — the time is now.

That’s what this project is all about.

May you find something here that speaks to & inspires you.

 The Mission

Our mission is to weave the spiritual and practical realms.

  1. We help spiritual solopreneurs — including interfaith chaplains, healers, and creatives — and spiritutal-but-not-religious seekers alike by offering out-of-the-box, spiritually-infused ways to navigate their journey with clarity and connection (whether that be in business or in life).

  2. We strive to bring practical resources, tools, and support to women (midlife and beyond) who wish to bring more good to the world through their work or personal endeavors.

  3. We connect those offering non-traditional spiritual, healing, and creative services with those seeking them.

Everyone has been made for some particular work, and the desire for that work has been put in every heart. Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love.

The Mayo Moment: The Catalyst

This moment of clarity came unexpectedly. I was sitting in my home office, working on a freelance feature article for a client about Duke's mayo and its growing popularity in Latin America. Mid keystroke, I froze with the sudden thought: "Who cares?” followed by the deeper question: “Surely I'm meant to do more than this?"

Finding Purpose

Around this time, a dear friend was considering enrollment in a chaplaincy program at ChIME. As I walked alongside her during her two-year journey, something clicked. This was it! Though I had no clue what I'd actually do with chaplaincy training, I knew I had to follow that inner knowing.

It wasn't until the end of my second year during my ChIME internship, learning from three women spiritual solopreneurs, that everything finally came together. The Spirited Purpose Project was born — a perfect blend of everything I am and everything I've learned along the way.

Looking back, it's amazing how it all connects — from that hot restaurant kitchen to spiritual seeking, from writing about mayo to chaplaincy. This journey reveals how purpose often emerges not in a single flash of insight, but through a series of random-seeming pieces that eventually align to show us our path.

  • Because we’re made of and for many things, I find I’m a contradiction of multitudes: Are you?

    1. I’m an ordained interfaith chaplain, but I’m not the kind most people think. I don’t officiate ceremonies or stand behind a pulpit.
My form of chaplaincy is creating presence and a safe space for listening, whether in everyday life — or “in business.”

    2. I’m a mystic but not the kind that lives in ashram. I find my mystical ways in worldly and otherworldly connections with nature and people — and with myself, by looking inward through the lens of various mystical teachings. Yet, Universal Sufism is my foundation.

    3. I like business, in general, and marketing, especially. But not the kind of marketing that suggests you contort yourself into someone you are not in order to follow someone else’s outward-focused “rules“ around how to be successful. To me, being in business and marketing your work starts as an “inside job.” And then from that place you move outward more purposefully into the world.

    4. I’m a nature lover who is often quite content to commune with the trees and birds outside my window. From my comfy blue floral chair. With a hot beverage in a pretty mug in hand.

    5. I’ve been told I’m a great listener who likes to talk! In my defense, it’s to process what’s going on with me. We don’t need answers; We need others to listen so we can hear ourselves.

    6. I’m a full-blown cat lady with no cat, who shares the couch with a dog. He claimed “my spot” and hasn’t given it back. I bow to these more-than-humans beings.

    7. I’m an introvert with bold extrovert tendencies, and to pull that off, I need lots of contemplative, still, quiet time. That’s my business secret — do “nothing” to do something.

    8. I’m a creative who for decades believed that I wasn’t that at all. Until I realized that creating a business is a grand creative act — as is growing and sustaining it.

    9. I’m spiritual-but-not-religious, though I was raised in the Catholic Church. I respect those who find their truth in churches, temples, and mosques, even if I do not.

      And last —

    10. I love Mondays. When I worked in a corporate office cubicle {she shudders}, I bucked the norm by taking off Mondays when I could. Mostly because I’ve always liked this day, but also because my co-workers were at their worst on Mondays and most tolerable on Fridays (why take off then?)
Later, as I casually studied astrology, I learned Monday is the moon’s day: a perfect day for deep reflection, connections, and nurturing. Need I say more?

  • What’s with the name?
Spirited: Lively, full of life, spirit or courage.

Purpose: A result that is desired, an intention.

Project: A planned endeavor, usually with a specific goal & accomplished in several stages.

This is the place for spirit-fueled, courageous women to meet and grow together in a safe space, with intention (or goals) — whether that be to discover or grow a business, get clear on one’s purpose, or to connect more deeply and meaningfully with themselves and with others.

How do you define a spiritual solopreneur?
By our “definition,” a spiritual solopreneur is a woman who runs her business independently, bringing her whole heart and soul into every aspect of her work. Unlike traditional business owners or even conscious entrepreneurs, she weaves spirituality and perhaps even her own spiritual practice seamlessly into her business offerings - there's no separation between her spiritual life and her work life. What makes her unique is that she gets to define this spiritual connection in her own authentic way, whether that means incorporating meditation, energy work, intuitive practices, or whatever else resonates with her.

At the core of her business is a genuine desire to create positive change, knowing that her work, her spirit, and her impact on others are all beautifully interconnected.

She's not just building a business; she's creating a sacred space where her gifts can serve the greater good.

People doing spiritual work don’t expect to be compensated for their services, do they?
    Ummm, they sure do!

Spiritual practitioners, like all professionals, deserve fair compensation for their expertise and services. It’s no different than paying a doctor or therapist or any other teacher or guide.

When you pay for spiritual guidance, ritual or ceremony for your life event, help in creating the book of your heart, or holistic healing work, you're acknowledging both the value of what you receive and the time, training, and dedication required to provide these services.

And here's something to consider - that money you spend? It creates this amazing ripple effect. The spiritual worker might use it to take more courses, help their kids through school, or support other small businesses in their community. It's like dropping a pebble in a pond - the waves keep spreading outward.

Why do you only work with midlife + women?
Mainly because these are the people who have been most attracted to and most helped to date by the work here. And, quite honestly, we’re of this demographic — so we walk the talk. We know that women in their second and third acts have wisdom and gifts to share that are so needed during this time.
Let us celebrate and support you.

What do you mean by “spiritual-but-not-religious?"
For our purposes and in our minds, these are the people that are not likely part of any organized religion. They define their faith or their spirituality — as well as a “higher power” (for example, be that god, goddess, diety, nature, source, the-all-that-is, etc.) — for themselves. We might say also that they are curious, open-minded seekers.

I don’t have or want a business. Is this space for me?
    Definitely!

What’s with “we” when it seems like it’s about you, Dana?
Excellent question! The Spirited Purpose Project is bigger than one person (aka, me, Dana). This is a budding and growing collaborative effort. Though I am the one who initiated what you find here, it is not about me — it’s about all of us.

Dana’s Journey

You know how sometimes the most meaningful things in life start with the most random combination of events? Well, my path to The Spirited Purpose Project began with a steamy commercial kitchen, a random Sufi flyer, a no-nonsense predictive astrologer — and believe it or not, Duke's mayo. Yes, you read that correctly!

Growing Up in the Family Business

At age 12 — the earliest allowed by law and my parents — I began working summers over a steaming commercial dishwasher in our family restaurant. As a third-generation business owner, entrepreneurship was practically in my DNA.

Even when I took detours and worked for other people later in life, I always knew deep down that I'd end up doing my own thing. It's just where I feel most alive. Most creative. Most me.

That Life-Changing Flyer: A Spiritual Turn

In 2007, a seemingly ordinary flyer on a friend's coffee table changed everything. It described an upcoming Sufi retreat about, among other things, finding your purpose, based on the teachings of this Indian mystic and musician named Hazrat Inayat Khan. They were describing something called sacred agriculture, and honestly? I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about, but one thing was certain: I was going to be at that retreat. While my head was confused, my soul was already packing!

That flyer changed everything. From that moment on, I dove deep into the Universal Sufi path of the Inayatiyya. This tradition has gently transformed and over time expanded every area of my life.

The Bridge Between Worlds

By 2019, now in my early fifties, I was longing to connect my spiritual life with my work. I wanted these to be one and the same, woven together with my purpose. I had founded and grown two previous solopreneur ventures that didn’t quite do that. On a friend's suggestion, I sought guidance from an astrologer. (Stay with me here!) I thought maybe my birth chart could give me some clues about what I was meant to do. During the reading, I asked the age-old question: "What am I here to do?"

The astrologer, without missing a beat, says, "Why don't you put out a shingle saying 'Dana's Listening Service'?"

I laughed then, not knowing the prophecy of her words. She offered that many people don’t need therapy but simply need someone to listen — and my natal chart indicated this could be part of my path. She also helped me understand my intuitive and empathic abilities (also indicated in my chart), offering this practical wisdom: "Think of your intuition like a vacuum cleaner — just put it away in the closet and pull it out when you need it."

Which leads us to Duke’s Mayo and ultimately to the Spirited Purpose Project . . .
I was sitting alone, in my home office tackling my latest gig: writing a feature article for my latest copywriting client about Duke’s mayo and how at that time it was the fastest growing condiment in Latin America. As I was typing away trying to include all the facts and stats the client wanted included in this piece, I froze mid keystroke and thought — who cares? Followed by, surely I’m meant to do more than this?

It was around this time that a dear friend was thinking about enrolling in a chaplaincy program at a place called ChIME. I was interested in what she was doing, so I checked it out. As I walking with her during this two-year program, I knew this was "IT.” What I would do with my own chaplaincy training, I had no idea. It wasn’t until my ChIME internship experience, where I learned from three women spiritual solopreneurs, that I found my purpose: The Spirited Purpose Project, where I get to use all of my talents, trainings, education, spirituality, and gifts.
